This channel is dedicated to teaching emergency medicine procedures and displaying unique and interesting medical conditions. This channel is only possible because our patients collaborate with us and give permission for their stories to be told so that others might learn. We value this trust and will never take it for granted. And, without the willing support of my University of South Alabama colleagues these videos would never be possible. This channel is monetized and 100% of any money earned from these UA-cam videos is donated to a charitable, non-profit foundation, the Mellick Foundation, Inc. All money earned is donated to help the less fortunate and to support medical education. Before posting all videos are reviewed by compliance officers, a peer group of emergency physicians, a legal team, and the Office of Communications & Marketing. Our goal is to deliver the highest quality training videos possible. We would be honored if you would subscribe to this channel.

Resuscitative Thoracotomy Procedure - Viewer Discretion Advised
Переглядів 8 тис.3 місяці тому
This video was recently re-created for use in an emergency medicine textbook. The patient was a blunt trauma patient who recently lost his vital signs. If recalled correctly, the team had little time to prepare for the patient's arrival and the trauma team was not present. The lack of PPE is concerning and demonstrates the importance of being able to prepare for the arrival of the patient.

Wait so what bit him? That was a weird looking bite
Great idea! I also used a water bottle as a sharps container in the Philippines after typhoon Haiyan. Just cut off the top part, invert it into the bottle
Since a phone is a wonderful tool for this sort of exam, it would be nice if we could control the light level like you can on a slit lamp exam. Better yet, have the option for slit lighting like is used on a SLE or even an ophthalmoscope. Shouldn't be hard to develop for a phone. I'll give you first dibs on the patent. :)
Great idea! No no you go first!!
I swear we are getting so close to having Dr. McCoy's medical scanning thing that he used on Star Trek. It's a pity that the blood testing machine that used very little sample turned out to be a scam. You could probably have the power of a suite of imaging devices and full lab capabilities in a unit the size of an iPad. Anyhow, another great video!
Looked like a wonderful trip. I'M sure helped a lot of people that needed help. I'M sure your were blessed as well. Thank you for taking the time out of your bus life and donating your time. God Bless!
“Your Black & Decker”, yes, my DeWalt.
Looks like a Swedish made device from Austin Powers bag… 🇸🇪
Very interesting. I have a dissection that happened back in 2009. I am doing well just had my annual CT Scan today see the surgeon next week.
Best of luck!
everyone wins during those missions… and the US continues to prove itself as an essential apparatus. We thank God almighty for the provisions and for wonderful beings like you all… 🙏🏼 Un abrazo!
Thank you!!
❤❤good job 💕💕
Thank you!
Very incredible how much you can do with a little technology. ❤
Looked like fun! I hope you had a good time.
Thanks! We definitely did!
Such an experience
Thank you for this tutorial I realy needed it
Perfect! Thank you!
I never understood why these things hurt so bad. Like mine is jn my jndex finger but the whole finger hurts
Doc what is the advantage of this? Why not just use it orally? This why some dosage goes out from the edges of the bottle.
Because inhaling directly from the inhaler is often very difficult for small children
i had two cardioversions for atrial fibrillation. I don't remember either procedures as they heavily sedated me. No more problems in the last 7 years.
Absolutely amazing!
Thats some great ingenuity.
God bless you and your team on this mission . I was having heart issues and wanted to see what it was like to receive treatment in the ER and your videos popped up . I learned a lot through the dr you treated on your channel .
That is so encouraging to hear. Thank you for your kind words!
@@lmellick Your very welcome .
Молодцы )
Very innovative!! 👍🏼
Thank you! 😊
That is brilliant! So simple yet remarkable. Thank you doctor for sharing!
You are welcome!!
Posterior Tibial block would be appropriate anesthesia
Totally agree! We talked about a block but neither of us had done them!
Good job Larry. What beach ?
I think it was near Juan Dolio. Thanks!
Developed a torsion around 2021 december. Went to hospital cus the pains were unbearable. It was aroud 12am. They performed lab test and told me its infection. These people never examined my testicles, they were probably sleeping. So i was given some medicine for pain relief. Few days. My testicle got damaged.
Happens way too often!
I will scream If I got that😅
(Would never suggest doing this) my father worked manual labor for decades and he would just relieve the pressure with the tools he had (using a lighter to make it as close to sterile as possible). It didn't seem to phase him but personally I'd probably yelp if I did the same thing. Different breed. My worst injury when it came to digits was a large splinter that went almost through my big toe from the bottom but the toenail stopped it. My entire leg was flinching from the pain.
I was wondering if there was some trick. Nope. Big needle, scraping, gouging, ok got it.
I had one it was absolutely huge had it drained in the ER i couldn’t even sit I tried a heating pad to pop it black sab nothing worked i could hardly walk
Poor kid. That would suck. 😢
As a corpsman in the navy we removed sea urchin spines from some of the crew when we visited the Seychelles.
Very informative. I'm not a medical professional (EMT way back in 2012, currently work in Clinical Research, Oncology mostly) but I have seen a lot of Pharma ads about wet AMD and was so curious to know what a patient actually presents with. Thanks Doc! (and thank you to your Ophthalmologist)
I bet that was painful
Cool! Yeah to road side medicine! ❤️
Thank you for all you do. God Bless!
Thank you!
Really? No gloves???
We did put on gloves at one moment in time, but in the end we never actually directly touched the wounds with our hands. Nevertheless, the heat made it hard to put on gloves due to the perspiration.
This is the Dominican and supplies are sparse. On the medical missions I've been on we had 25 pairs of gloves for the entire trip so we saved them for the most invasive procedures like internal examinations and gaping or actively bleeding wounds. Also, most gloves are no cleaner than hands if you perform hand hygiene adequately.
He will remember that trip for a long time. I love the ocean, but there are scary creatures in it.
Same here!
I am assuming the doxy is to cover for Vibrio. Am I on the right track?
Doxy is a great antibiotic for uti and skin infections
Yes, it does cover vibrio! Thanks for asking!
Happened to me as a kid. (Grew up in the Dominican Republic) I didn't feel it till the next day at school. The teacher came at me with a big needle.. I told her I would do it myself! I didn't trust anyone else and got it out myself. It wasn't from a live one. Was from a dead one up on the sand. I must have been like 8 or 9 years old. Lol didn't get a tetanus shot 🤷♀️ but have gotten plenty in later years while working with animals. Lol
Thanks for the great testimonial!
Could you have also used glue or wax and “peeled-off” the splinters? Like cactus splinters? 🤔
Thanks for the suggestion!
no. usually too deep.
Doubtful
I can’t look 🫣
😢😢😢😢😢
Noooooooooooo Noooo nooo nooo
Yep yep I definitely feel something Ouch😬😬
